🌿 Homemade Vegan Sazón (No MSG, No Artificial Coloring)
Let’s make that homemade vegan sazón—con sabor, sin chemicals. This DIY blend skips the MSG, skips the food coloring, but keeps all the punchy, savory flavor we love in Puerto Rican cooking.
🌿 Homemade Vegan Sazón (No MSG, No Artificial Coloring)
Total Time: 5 mins | Yields: ~6 tablespoons (about 6 packets worth)
Sazón is the backbone of Latin flavor—salty, garlicky, and warm with just the right touch of earthiness. Store-bought versions usually sneak in MSG and artificial dyes (👀 annatto color #40, we see you). This one’s made from pantry spices, 100% vegan and clean.
🛒 Ingredients:
-
1 tbsp ground coriander
-
1 tbsp ground cumin
-
1 tbsp garlic powder
-
1 tbsp onion powder
-
1 tbsp dried oregano (preferably Dominican or Mexican)
-
1 tbsp sweet paprika (smoked works too!)
-
1½ tsp turmeric (for color + subtle earthy tone)
-
1½ tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
Optional: ½ tsp ground annatto (achiote powder), for natural color
👩🍳 Instructions:
-
Mix it all up:
Add all spices to a bowl or small mason jar. Stir or shake until fully combined. -
Store it right:
Keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dry spot—should stay fresh for 4–6 months. -
Use it like a G:
Use 1 to 1½ teaspoons in place of a sazón packet in recipes like arroz con gandules, beans, stews, tofu marinades, etc.
🧠 Mom Tips:
-
🧂 Salt control? Feel free to cut back on the salt and season to taste in your dishes instead.
-
🧡 Want a deeper color? Add a bit more turmeric or ground annatto (totally natural and beautiful).
-
🎁 Gift idea: Put in a small jar, label it “Sazón de Carmen,” and bless your people at the holidays!
🥣 Why I Love It:
This mix is a pantry hero. I make it in bulk and keep it in a reused glass jar marked with a Sharpie. It makes everything taste like home—and I don’t have to worry about mystery ingredients. My beans, rice, and tofu always stay ready.
